2022 BMW R nineT Scrambler Review.

Based on the successful R nineT base platform that proved a hit in the heyday of the retro classic motorcycle movement, the R nineT Scrambler debuted in 2017. It remained one of the most popular versions of R nineT. Using the same boxer engine platform as the previous generation, the Scrambler received a slightly longer-travel suspension, different chassis geometry, and a 19-inch front wheel to give it some off-road prowess and enhance the adventure bike look.

The entire R nineT lineup has received several subtle upgrades for 2021. To meet the stricter Euro 5 emissions regulations, the new combustion-enhanced cylinder heads run cleaner and increase power in the low- and mid-range. The round analog speedometer AND cylinder head covers have been changed. A USB port for phone charging has become standard, and LEDs now control all lighting. A new rear shock with travel-dependent damping also features a handwheel spring preload adjuster. Electronics have been upgraded, with on-road and rain modes becoming standard equipment in addition to ABS Pro (Corner ABS) and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC, Engine Controlled Braking). With the optional Ride Modes Pro program, you can access Dirt ride mode, which optimizes traction control, throttle response, and ABS to better suit off-road conditions.

POWERTRAIN: TRANSMISSION, ENGINE, AND PERFORMANCE

Using the previous generation’s 1,170cc air-oil-cooled, opposed engine with updated cylinder heads to improve combustion to meet stricter Euro 5 emissions regulations, BMW claims 109bhp at 7,250 rpm with 85 lb-ft of torque. 6,000 rpm for the latest R nineT. This is for one hp less than the previous version. Still, BMW claims a noticeable increase in power in the mid-range, with peak power 500 rpm earlier than the old version.

HANDLING OF THE 2022 BMW R NINET SCRAMBLER

The Scrambler has some significant differences from the standard R nineT or Pure models, starting with a giant 19-inch front wheel, a more than two-degree increase in head angle (26.8 degrees versus 28.5 degrees on the standard R nineT and 26.6 degrees on Pure ) for better off-road stability and a wheelbase of more than an inch. This results in noticeably heavier and more sluggish steering than the standard R nineT on the street, even more so if you opt for the Metzeler Karoo 3 off-road rubber. The softer springs and damping in the suspension are quickly overloaded on sharp potholes and washouts if you try to pick up the pace in any way, on or off-road.

BRAKES OF THE 2022 BMW R NINET SCRAMBLER

The R nineT Scrambler uses the identical twin four-piston Brembo calipers and 320mm front disc as all other R nineT models, providing excellent stopping power (if you’re using off-road tires, as well as their cobble grip will allow). A twin-piston sliding-pin caliper and 264mm diameter disc handle the rear brake duties.

ERGONOMICS: UTILITY AND COMFORT

In typical Scrambler fashion, the 2022 BMW R nineT Scrambler has a standard upright riding position, short reach to the tubular handlebars, decent legroom, and a solid padded seat. Due to the one-piece seat, there is also enough space for passengers. Standing on off-road obstacle courses isn’t very comfortable because the posts don’t go up high enough, forcing your torso to the front more than usual.

ELECTRONICS OF THE 2022 BMW R NINET SCRAMBLER

Some of the upgrades for 2021 included driver assistance electronics in the form of Road and Rain driving modes, ABS and ABS Pro (Corner ABS), and Dynamic Engine Braking systems fitted as standard equipment. A Ride Modes Pro option is now available, allowing you to access the Dirt ride mode; this mode shows the intervention parameters for traction control, ABS/ABS Pro, and dynamic engine braking control to give the rider more freedom of action when riding off-road. The headlights, tail lights, and turn signals are all LED units, and a USB port for charging your smartphone or other personal electronics.

MAINTENANCE COVERAGE AND WARRANTY

The 2022 BMW R nineT Scrambler comes with BMW’s excellent three-year, 36,000-mile warranty and three years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance.

The R nineT Scrambler company prides itself on the quality of its motorcycles, and a three-year, 36,000-mile warranty shows its confidence in these products. The R nineT Scrambler has the typical BMW quality feel throughout. All available options and parts are top-shelf.
